Volunteer Visiting

‘The well-being of the Ostomate is the ultimate goal of the partnership between the surgeon, stoma nurse and the trained Ostomy visitor’. (The International Ostomy Association Visitor Training Guide, 2006)
-----------------------

CUPID Volunteer Visitors are trained individuals, who having adjusted well to Ostomy forming surgery, or to an alternative colo-rectal procedure, wish to share positive experiences with new or potential Ostomates. This may be in person or by telephone. The Volunteer Visitor is an integral member of the rehabilitation team helping the Ostomate return to leading a normal life within society.

Every attempt is made, to match patients with visitors of a similar age, gender (if a preference is cited) type of surgery and lifestyle, providing the visual proof of a well-adjusted ostomate.

Training.
Group training sessions, are held over a two-day period at The Royal Bournemouth NHS Trust. These sessions explore the role of the Volunteer Visitor, along with the protocols and responsibilities of visiting a patient.

Since 2007 potential visitors will be trained alongside new members of the Semi-colons Colo-rectal cancer support group. Semi-colons support group. Following the course is an informal meeting with the Stoma Nurses to share the experience.
